JailbreakMe, the online service of sorts which let users jailbreak their iOS devices with a swipe of the finger, has been transferred to an untrusted owner after being sold recently and, as such, is no longer safe for use. The developer community will instead host the jailbreaking tool on a new domain which weve discussed after the jump.

The news comes straight from eminent jailbreak developer and iPhone hacker MuscleNerd in the form of a series of tweets sent out from his Twitter account.

What basically has happened is that Conceited Apps, an iOS and OS X development studio, has sold the domain jailbreakme (they allowed comex to use it to host his jailbreaking tool). Jailbreaking enthusiasts will be quick to recognize the domain name, as it was where iPhone hacker comex hosted his popular jailbreaking tool JailbreakMe. The domain name has apparently been sold to an absolutely unknown, untrusted, and unsafe owner and, as of writing, there is no web-based jailbreaking solution available.

From Twitter:

Its sad @ConceitedApps sold out jailbreakme for $$. Luckily we have jailbreaks.me and wont ever sell out.

@aksansai @conceitedapps the new owner of jailbreakme is absolutely unknown, untrusted, and unsafe..in perfect place for iPhone malware

@ModMyiDevices yep, all the web-based JBs will be at jailbreaks.me now. And we wont ever sell out like @ConceitedApps, guaranteed

There is no reason to be worried, though. MuscleNerd has categorically stated that comex JailbreakMe tool will be available soon on a new domain jailbreaks.me and, as such, folks who wish to jailbreak their iOS device on iOS 4.3.3 will be able to use it the way they used it on jailbreakme. MuscleNerd has stated that jailbreaks.me will never be sold out.

As a warning, users are strongly suggested to STAY AWAY from JailbreakMe as its new owner may use it to spread iOS malware.

Comexs most recent jailbreaking tool JailbreakMe 3.0 - was released in early July. It used a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari to gain privileged access to iOS devices. Because the exploit was on a software level, it meant all iOS devices running iOS 4.3.3 were jailbreak-able using this tool. It was and, to date, is the only way to jailbreak the iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.3.

Last time we checked, over 2 million devices had been jailbroken using JailbreakMe (the number should be much, much greater now). The PDF exploit was later patched by Apple in a security update (iOS 4.3.4). The talented 19 year old developer behind the tool was also hired by Apple.

^ Old news!

RedmondPie wrote Yesterday, we reported that thetechgame.org had been sold to an unknown person and that Comexs web-based jailbreaking tool would be transferred to a new Jailbreaks.me domain. Well, there is good news to be heard regarding the story, as the thetechgame.org domain has been transferred to Cydia developer Saurik.

Saurik poses with Redmond Pie poster at MyGreatFest jailbreak convention

The news comes from Saurik himself. Jay saurik Freeman, as jailbreaking enthusiasts will know, is a eminent part of the iOS jailbreaking community. He is the creator of three very important programs: an app store for jailbroken iOS devices called Cydia, a theming system called WinterBoard which lets you completely change how your iOS device looks and an extension called MobileSubstrate which allows third party UI tweaks to run on iOS.

Coming back to the news: Saurik now owns the thetechgame.org domain and Comexs jailbreaking tool will be hosted there instead of the previously planned Jailbreaks.me, after Conceited Apps (previous owner of thetechgame.org) sold it to, according to iPhone hacker MuscleNerd, an unknown, untrusted and unsafe owner.

From Sauriks Twitter account:

Yesterday, we learned that thetechgame.org was sold in July; today, I talked with the new owner: he is actually very likable and awesome. ;P

and tonight, thetechgame.org was transferred to me (convenient, as I host the site ;P); so, going forward, we no longer need to worry!

Jailbreaking enthusiasts were earlier warned to stay away from thetechgame.org, as its unknown owner was, well, suspected to use it for spreading iOS malware (viruses, trojans, spyware etc.) but that warning no longer stands since the domain is back in the jailbreaking communitys hands.

thetechgame.org was used by eminent iPhone hacker and jailbreak developer Comex to host his jailbreaking tools. The most recent iteration of his tool, called JailbreakMe 3.0 used a software-level PDF exploit in Mobile Safari on iOS 4.3.3 to jailbreak all iOS devices on the then latest version of iOS. It is, to date, the only tool that can jailbreak the iPad 2. JailbreakMe 3.0 has been used at least 2 million times to jailbreak iOS devices, so it is (or shall we say was) quite a popular jailbreaking tool.

A few days after the release of JailbreakMe 3.0, Apple patched the PDF exploit and released iOS 4.3.4. Comex the talented 19 year old developer behind the tool was later hired by Apple.

It's Now safe to use Jailbreak me

If people go to the link, it's at THEIR OWN RISK.

Usually, people use redsn0w, greenpois0n, or sn0wbreeze. I didn't use Jailbreak Me more than twice. I moved on to tethering. So, if what you posted is true :

GOING TO JAILBREAK ME IS AT YOUR OWN RISK, WE ARE NO LONGER RESPONSIBLE.
