You must ask for their .DAT map file, if you want to share yours or replace your here's how you get to that file.
If this doesn't help, message me.
Windows 7
Start Menu
Search, %appdata%
Roaming > .minecraft > Saves > world name
And the "level.dat" is the world file.
That is also the file someone needs to give to you to get their map I believe, if it isn't they need to give you the whole folder containing everything in there.
Windows XP:
Start > Run > %appdata%
.minecraft > saves
And the "level.dat" is the world file.

Hope I helped. Correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

you are correct but it's better to just give them the whole folder so you don't accidentally  up one of their worlds

Hey james, loved your work with WaW, heres how ya do it:
1. Download their file.
2. Open in WINRAR (if .rar file, usually is)
3. If you have windows 7/Vista search %appdata% and you should find a folder named Roaming, click on it.
4. Open the .minecraft subfolder
5. Open "Saves" and drag your downloaded map (The folder inside the .rar file) to the "saves" folder.
6. Open up minecraft (if already open go to singleplayer) and there ya go!
