Earn rep by posting, people can give you rep if they like what you have posted, i.e, something informative or whatever.
You have to buy Gold, gives you access to locked areas and other stuff. go to the "Premium" tab to find out more about Gold.
Also, people can Gift you gold, if they feel you deserve it, like, see you helping out..

You earn rep by posting replys and making threads. 100 Repuation points are 1 Reputation Power. You can also get rep from others.

And Gold, you have to buy it or if you are lucky someone can gift it.

Also you earn Gold by paying $5.97 Paypal or had been gifted by some one.

The Rep System

You need 25 Post to earn 1 REP Power

You need 100 Points to get 1 REP Power, you get points by getting rep by people.

Do not Abuse the REP System like REP Boosting!
