Now, I thought that 100k views at the beginning of the day was nothing special, considering it was posted in August.
But it has gained 700k views from the beginning of the day until now. Holy shit.
For those too lazy to view the video, it's basically an eighth grade kid (12-14) who is complaining about his hard life in school, getting bullied, cutting himself, etc, all with note cards and playing depressing music in the background.
To a naive, or simple-minded person, this video inspires hope to everyone. It shows that we're all susceptible to pain and misery, and that bullying is a real thing and is bad. There are comments, rooting for the kid, saying that they're there for him, and that he can get through it. There are people saying how bullying should be stopped, and how he's strong for what he's doing.
So, in response to all those people: You're **** nuts.
I'll explain why:
And to start, I'm not asking for bullying, or saying that harassing others is a good thing. In fact, people should stop being dicks to one another. But at the same time, if someone is hurting you physically or mentally, don't just sit there like a bitch and take it. Do something about it. However, I do know that in some cases it can be entirely serious (such as domestic abuse), and that escape is almost impossible. And for those people, I wish for the best.
However, this video is not one of those things.
And this is why.
1. There is conveniently no words spoken.
Now, aside from the kid and the notes, what do you notice? The music. That's right. He has chosen sad music to his little complaints. This not only cheapens the video, but it doesn't make me take him seriously. He's playing sad music to make you feel bad for him. This is the same technique used in animal abuse commercials, or advertising ways to help homeless families.
Point is: The music is only there to make you feel guilty. Now, you may think: "But I did nothing wrong!", well here's the thing: You didn't do anything. But this type of advertising makes you feel like shit-- it makes you want to do something. Because if there's someone in need, you don't want to feel like a dick and leave them be. But that's what this does. And it's working. Saps are falling for it and are pitching in to give the kid attention.
2. It's not so much a cry for help as it is attention.
Half way through the video, he says how he's starting eighth grade and how he'll have no friends because they're starting high school. And then what does he do? He cries. He then states how everyone hates him at his school, saying how he's pretty much helpless. He makes the viewer go "awh, how sweet! HE NEEDS HELP!"
I mean, it's understandable, starting school up again can be hard. But you know what? You **** deal with it. You get new friends, or you solo the year and you get your ass up and you make it through the day.
He is whining about things that almost every other **** kid goes through. He feels like he's alone-- he feels like he's pathetic. And it's not that that alone bothers me, because most people feel that way. But it's the fact that people are buying it .
Look at the kid. He's telling you his troubles on the computer. Through a webcam. On YouTube. If his life were really that tough, why would he have such conveniences to technology? If he really had it rough, then how come he has the freedom to live in a home where they can afford a computer? I mean, the couch he's sitting on is made of leather by the looks of it. He must really have it rough. I bet he has all types of trouble getting called a penis-head on XBox live while playing Modern Warfare 3.
3. His troubles are common.
I've watched the whole video. And shit, it was hard to. Not because of it being "sad", but just how corny it was, and my eyes were rolling so much they've practically slipped out of their sockets.
His main concerns? He's going to a school where he gets bullied, and how his friends are going to high school. Then he shows his "scars" to the camera, unsuccessfully.
I mean, I get it. It's tough moving on in school. But as you get older, you realize that it doesn't even matter. Middle school is when every other kid feels like they're pathetic anyway, so they bully to make themselves feel better. Does it make it right? Of course not. But that's part of growing up. And if it gets too intense, do something about it, don't whine on the Internet.
But it's the fact how people are feeling bad for him about it. He has friends, right? Who cares if they're in high school? Doesn't mean he can't hang out with 'em still. And all he seems to be complaining about is how people insult him verbally. Yeah, sure. It hurts. But he's obviously too easily trolled if it keeps happening. Any alternatives he has to stopping any bulling are either not working, or he's not taking them. A lot of solutions work, and if he's instead going to bundle up his emotions and vent them online, then he's just begging for attention.
4. The corniness.
The music, the crying, and the complaining is just so pathetic. He's sad, I got it. I was sad too in the same chapter of my life. Most kids are. But he takes it to the next level.
You know what I did when I got home from school if I felt bad? I **** went into my room and sat my ass down and killed people in video games. I did that shit and I felt better.
You know what this kid does? He goes online on his comfortable chair, most likely ignoring any help from his friends (which are all in high school, so apparently he loses all contact with them, right?), and then cries on the computer while posting a video about it. Not just a video, no. But a video in the same vein as a commercial advertising animal cruelty. There are music, there are tears. He's not just doing it for venting purposes. He's doing it for manipulation-- for attention.
People have their own ways of venting their troubles. But what is obnoxious is how people are falling for it .
I have grown up with these kids all my life. My brother was one, in fact. And all I'm seeing is the same shit.
If you want attention, you go for the weak points that people have. You first aim for tears, to make yourself look smaller, and easier to want to take care of. Babies do this. That's understandable, though. When babies do it, it's for survival. But when it continues through adolescence into adult hood, it's just for attention.
Then you aim for the guilt spot. This video does it brilliantly. He didn't just choose any track that a kid his age likes. No-ho. He chooses the sad of the sad. He chooses a song that makes you want to feel sad, regardless of what the video is to. And sync the video with a crying kid? Cake.
And when you have both the attention and the guilt, why, then you just reel in the prize. People are falling for it! All you do is crack a small smile and weep a little more. They'll keep you happy. Until you do it all again.
You see, my main problem isn't the kid. It's the people falling for it. Normally I wouldn't give two shits if I saw this video. Just an attention whore. But, watching the views peak over 700k in one day, with very minimal amounts of trolling, my eyes widened and my mouth became dry. People were eating it up. The little attention whore got his sweets.
Now, don't be a heartless bastard and assume all things out of someone. I mean, I'm sure he may have had quite a bullying time. But watching him pull all these formulas together, all on YouTube in a nice looking area, no less, I've just gone to say he's an attention whore.
If you're one to want to stop bullying, that's great. Continue your goal. But don't use this as a reference. And don't fall for it.
Basically sums up my view.
