If you were to back it up, how would you restore it if you can't access you droid?

Installing a rom will wipe data, meaning restored to factory, however you can goto your contacts and hit the menu button and export contacts to sd card and then import them after you flash your rom

As for the bricking thing, as long as you have a custom recovery on your phone there is always a way to fix it, mostly the only way to really brick your phone is to not take backup precautions, recovery, ect. If you happen to flash a Rom and your battery dies and wont charge, I made a tut for that too.
