make sure you have all the correct drivers, make sure that your not using a front usb port the back ports in the computer are the best to use. and also after you install the drivers make sure that you restart your computer, and as everyone has said above.. make sure that your running your program as admin

z4root is one of the root apps easy root is another they are on 4shared and there are more out their if ur phone isnt supported.
