New to Ps3 and some confusion

Hey guys haven't been on in a while just wondering I got a 40GB ps3 for free and I'm wondering the pros and cons of these things im seeing which I dont fully understand.
If anyone would be as kind to inform me as to the pro's and con's and about these topics please leave a reply for me.
*PS3 Homebrew and linux
*PS3 Jailbreak
*PS3 modded lobbies etc.
*If I am ever banned can I get the account back? And can I still use the PlayStation 3 for other accounts or is there a console ban like xbox360
Like I said above what are the pro's the con's of the topics marked with asterisks above, will these things ban me? will they make the PlayStation 3 slower? What are these things? And any other information on these things would be great.
(I am new to ps3 go easy fellas)
