Are they upgradeable? I want to get a desktop because I can build one myself and save a ton of money but I also want something portable so I'm considering an Alienware, but my main concern is having something that won't get phased out in a couple of years.

Why would and Alienware desktop be portable? Or do you mean a laptop? Either way they are a huge ripoff. Build a desktop for gaming and buy a relatively cheap laptop for mobile use.

AlienWare computers use awful solder and break after a couple of years, build your own computer. Its cheaper and it will perform better.

My income tax return is coming soon and with it I will have enough money to buy one of A.) Components required to build my own computer or B.) One per-built laptop. I usually don't play games that require extremely powerful specs but for some a graphics card would be nice. I live a slightly mobile live, going from friends house to friends house and I couldn't bring a desktop with me; and from what I understand it is harder to build a custom laptop ( I can't even find empty laptop cases on TigerDirect), so I would have to purchase one, if I'm going to buy a gaming laptop I want to ensure that I get a laptop that has SOME availability of upgrading though and not 100% integrated.

Well mostly what you need to know is that laptops are not meant for gaming. Even the good gaming laptops are heavy and huge. You can barely use it like a laptop.

The one for $900 gets 27 FPS on MW2. I could build a PC that gets 150 FPS on MW2 for that price.

You should consider building your desktop, or I heard people at Best Buy can build it for you(for a fee). My friend's dad helped me build mine because he works at dell. It's really cheap compared to other people like Apple (lol) or Alienware, Asus, HP, etc.
