Rooting lets you actually use your phone to the fullest.

Bricking your phone means you pretty much break it. I bricked my old phone.

Basically that is flashing a kernel so you can over or under clock your cpu. For example if the droid x runs at 1 GHz which i think it does, then with different kernels you can make it run at 1.5 GHz or whatever the kernel allows. With programs such as setCPU or Rom Toolbox you can put it on set intervals or whatever you want in between. It is a risky thing to flash if you do not trust the kernel. If it comes from a trusted source and you are ready to flash it, you would download the .zip file and place it on your root folder of your sd card. Then boot into your custom recovery and flash it from the sd card. Should be very easy to flash. You do have to be rooted though and it is easier to flash with custom recoveries such as clockworkmod.

Also if you do flash a kernel, the first time you boot your phone it may take a min to boot up. Once it starts booting just set it down and walk away. Let everything load up before using it to avoid slowness and kernel problems.

So, why would anyone do that? Why not just get SetCPU??

And on a side note, what does kernal mean? CPU?

Well even with set CPU you can only go as far as the kernel will allow. Custom kernels can allow for bigger increases and other things such as custom governors to help increase performance or battery life. An example of a governor is when your battery is low, it goes into power save mode.

Basically stock kernels are only suppose to go to where they are.

Custom kernels allow for overclocking to a lot higher speeds.

The reason they do not just make the phones faster to begin with is because of stability. The cpu's are designed to run at a certain speed for max stability. Some people choose to keep them as they are, I personally overclocked every droid I have had.

Although I just got an iPhone 4s
