Synopsis

The game's main campaign is set during the rule of the late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire (270 BC AD 14), with the player assuming control of one of three Roman families; other factions are playable outside the main campaign. Gameplay consists of real-time tactical battles framed within a turn-based strategic campaign, taking place across Europe, North Africa and the Near East. On the large strategic scale, players spend each turn managing diplomacy, developing infrastructure, moving armies, and managing the population's growth and orderliness through taxes and gladiatorial games, among other tasks. On the smaller scale, real-time battles against enemy armies take place within or between cities, with the player commanding forces which can contain thousands of individual soldiers. Story

You are now a leader in the famous Roman empire! You now can become head of one the three great Roman houses at the time; the Julii, Brutii, and Scipiones. Each of these factions has a unique set of attributes, objectives, and a few quests to fulfil your faction you must complete these and do well in battle. The shortish campaign is designed for gamers who would like to control the empire of Rome. You simply pick any of the game's factions and set out to conquer 15 territories and eliminate two of that faction's historic rivals. Controlling more cities brings benefits in its increased geographical dominance and increased income from the new population's taxes. If you're unfamiliar with the Total War franchise, here's the hook: these games mix a turn-based empire-building game with a stunning real-time battle engine. However, more cities and larger populations become increasingly difficult to control, you will need to keep soldiers in the to keep control. The increased distance soldiers have to travel. Surprising attacks and disasters may happen through the campaign, you may bump into a Gaul stronghold or your city may become infested with a disease, these are some of the things that really keep the game going and exciting.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are sensational for this type of large open map plan. The fights and the combat are awesome. The details on the soldiers armour and weaponry are one-to-none. Even though you are getting these awesome graphics your PC doesn't even need to be that good, when I used to play this game I had my dads work PC so I couldn't of been that good anyway unless he was a hardcore OpTic player by night. The animals and environment is well developed too as soldiers do not just disappear over the horizon they actual retreat or fight out of view, and then using the cursor you can fly over there from the birds eye camera. The graphics have set a high standard for all PC games now days, set open in a vast environment. They are a big yes from me!

Controls

The controls are really simple and easy to get used to. Just use the cursor for everything pretty much, you barley use the arrow keys and not much with the w,a,s,f keys too. Unfortunately I can't really write much here because they are not many controls.

Overview

Love the game, you can really never get tired of it, once completed with one faction then do the others and when you have completed the others you will have forgotten the rest!, I really advise buying this game, it is really cheap now because it's old but, what a game.
