Synopsis
One of the first open world action games with role-playing elements to be released after Grand Theft Auto III, True Crime: Streets of LA focuses on the other side of the law in the genre of the police procedural. The player controls police officer Nick Kang, and is to set out catching criminals and doing missions for the police force.
True Crime's gameplay has been called "the GTA III clone where you play a cop," as the core mechanics are identical - the player can wreak havoc across the city, do whatever they want in the city and progresses through the storyline at their own leisure. However, as the game focuses on the other side of the law, committing similar crimes in True Crime: Streets of LA in comparison to that of Grand Theft Auto will has less severe concequences that Grand Theft Auto games, but will result in the player losing "good cop" points. If the player loses a certain amount of "good cop" points, their rank in the police force will drop, to the point where they are exiled from the police force entirely. If that does happen, the player will have to perform "good cop" actions in order to rise back up the police ranks. The amount of "good cop" points determines the game's ending.
Setting
The games setting takes place in Los Angeles hence the name of the game 'True Crime Streets Of LA'. In my personal opinion they couldn't have picked a better place to set the game. When i played it as a small child, for me the area you could be in was absolutely massive! probably one of the largest maps for a game ever(apart from GTA 4 of course)One thing that always annoyed me was the fact that there were neighborhoods surrounding the large area of LA you were in, and i was allways fancinated to go in them, but whenever i tryed i hit a barrier and it spawned me inside the game again. Overall the setting is amazing they couldn't have picked a better city and the size was huge, very whorthwhile game.
Setting Rating 8/10
Gameplay
The gameplay in general was pretty good there are some ups and downs though i guess. The one thing i loved that made all the bad things in the game just dissapear in my mind was the fact that, I had just completed fable one that came out about a month before this and i loved the concept of being good and evil changing the plot altogether. And BAM they bring that into 'True Crime Streets Of LA' I remeber completeing this game 3 times to do the final boss endings, and how the story changed, this for me was great. Also they brang a GTA style into this aswell, although it didnt quite work as you were a cop, that spoiled it for me. Now down to the bad things, they tryed to bring to many types of gameplay/levels in and it just ruined the story as it was going so well, the one thing i think everyone hated was the fact that at one point your fighting zombies, i mean seriously Zombies!? why, why would you possibly want to bring that in, nobody wants to go from killing a bunch of bank robbers in style to fighting zombies and mystical creatures? That for me ruined my entire opinion of the game. But apart from that everything was about average.
Gameplay Rating 6/10
Graphics
Well the graphics were okay, but it was the basic you run someone over and they just glitch to the ground type of thing, at the time the graphics were okay, but not the best. Now there just horribly borrible, i guess all the jumping moves and throing people into chairs and stuff was fine there were no bugs there for me just everywhere else. I cant even count the amount of times i have crashed into a building and just gone into it, so i have to load my save game back up again.Overall the graphics at the time wern't so great.
Graphics Rating 4/10
Controls
The controls were the same as any classic GTA styled game with a R1 SHOOT but R2 was the persision targeting and L1 was to get in an out of cars, this i found slightly anyoying but after a few hours of playing everything was fine.
Controls Rating 6.5/10
Conclusion
In conclusion i think the game is okay but could have done with some changes like the controls, the bugs in the map, stupid plots changes that make no sense, constant side quests coming up that i dont want to get involved in, and the graphics when you his someone with a car, but apart from that everything is swell.
Overall Rating 7.5/10
