He never was "the best". He played a lot, and he's gotten older and move on with his life. If you logged in and had 50+ people running after you wherever you went, would you still want to play?

He "quit" playing Runescape a few years ago in order to lose all the fans since he was #1 in the world for such a long time. He still plays, but doesn't strive to be #1 anymore. He is also more an adult now and has moved on with his life.
