Hitachi GDR-3120L

The following tutorial will take you through the simple process of communicating with a Hitachi GDR-3120L (Non-79 version) DVD Drive using Jungle Flasher and an X360USB PRO adapter.

Requirements:
Xecuter X360USB Pro
A DVD Drive Power source (the tutorial uses an Xecuter CK3 Pro - you can use an Xecuter CK3 Lite too of course)
Sata Cable (Supplied with X360USB Pro)
USB Cable (Supplied with X360USB Pro)
Latest version of Jungle Flasher (Must be v0.1.82 and above)
Latest version of X360USB PRO firmware (must be at least v18)
X360USB PRO Windows Drivers
Windows XP / Vista / 7 - 32bit or 64bit
MAC OSX (Using Parallels, Bootcamp or VMWare)

There are several versions of Hitachi GDR-3120L and this guide covers all versions except the 79 model. To find out which version of drive you have simply look at the label and you will see "ROM VER XXXXXX"

Here is an example of the Hitachi GDR-3120L DVD label. As you can see we have highlighted the ROM version - in this case it is what we would call an "Hitachi 46" (The letters after the numbers do not matter). The other versions to look out for are 32, 40, 36, 46, 47, 58, 59 & 78. All these versions follow the exact same process so you only need to use this one tutorial. If you have the 79 ROM Version, click here for that tutorial.

Before you connect everything you first need to install the X360USB Pro Drivers. These are signed and work in Windows XP / Vista / 7 both 32bit and 64bit. Download the small driverpack and plug in the X360USB PRO USB Cable. When it asks for the drivers simple point to the files you saved and they will install with ease. You are now ready to hook everything else up.

It's very easy to hook up your Hitachi GDR-3120L to your PC. Simply connect the DVD power supply (in this case the Xecuter CK3 Pro) to the DVD drive (take care to make sure it is fitted the correct way - the wrong way can damage your drive) and to a molex power cable from your PC or from an external Molex power supply. Then connect the SATA cable from the DVD drive to the X360USB Pro, and then connect the USB cable from the X360USB Pro to a USB port on your Netbook/Notebook/Laptop/Desktop computer.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

OK we are ready to begin:

1. Load up Jungle Flasher and...

(1) Select the MTK Flash 32 Tab
(2) Make sure the I/O Port is set to 0x000
(3) The X360USB Pro should be detected as Primary Master and the Firmware version will be displayed (in this case it is Ver 0.17)
(4) The Hitachi GDR-3120L should be detected and ready to work with

Note: Make sure USB Only is NOT Ticked

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

2. Now we are going to get the drive into ModeB so Windows can detect the drive and assign a drive letter. With older Hitachi drives you can usually do this by pressing the ModeB button on a CK3 power kit (Red LED), however we are going to show you how to do this using the Jungle Flasher software method.

(1) Select the Hitachi GDR3120 Tab in Jungle Flasher
(2) The correct drive version should be detected (in this case a 46)
(3) Click the Send Mode-B button

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

3. The next part is self explanatory. You will see a pop-up window with the following information. Simply hit eject on the CK3 (dont click the "Open" button in JF - that is for PortIO - we are using WinAPI) and switch the CK3 Power switch to OFF with the tray fully ejected, then click OK.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

4. After a couple of seconds turn the CK3 Pro power switch ON and the tray should then close and will kick automatically into ModeB.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

5. Now for the clever part. Wait a few seconds and the Hitachi drive will be automatically assigned a drive letter in WIN API Mode ( in this example - K )

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

6. Everything from this point is a piece of cake. First we are going to a full dump of the drives firmware. We will assume at this stage that the drive is stock and has never been touched before. If you ever have a drive that has been flashed before with a different firmware you will always need to first return it to stock.

(1) Select Dump Drive
(2) Click the Read To Source button
(3) The entire firmware dumped in 1068ms (that's 1.068 Seconds )

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

7. Now you will be asked to save the firmware file. I just created a directory called FW on the C: drive and saved it there.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

8. Once the firmware is saved it will be loaded into Jungle Flasher's source buffer. You will automatically switch to the Firmware Tool tab.

(1) This is a full description of your firmware and will tell you if its stock or not.
(2) This is your full DVD key.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

9. Now you are ready to program your drive. The following part of the guide is solely to show 3rd party tools working with the X360USB PRO. You must own any game that you backup and we do not condone any kind of piracy and this is purely for educational purposes only. We do not provide any of the LT Plus firmware files and they are not provided or included with Jungle Flasher so do not ask for them.

(1) Select the Hitachi GDR3120 tab
(2) Select Flash LT-Plus
(3) Click the button Flash LT-Plus

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

10. Jungle Flasher first tests Flash Stability by writing to sector 9003F000

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

11. If flashing is stable and ready to rock you will see this pop-up. Simply click YES.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

12. Success ! The Flashing process usually takes less than 3 seconds

Before we start to work with Jungle Flasher you need to burn the 79_Unlock CD which you can download from here. Use something like IMGBURN to burn the disc using a normal CD-R. Simply select write image file and load the .cue and burn. Thanks to C4 and Podger for this simple solution which stops you from having to buy expensive "passkey" type devices that require soldering and all sorts of unnecessary messing around.

OK we are ready to begin:

1. Load up Jungle Flasher and...

(1) Select the MTKFlash 32 Tab

Liteon DG-16D2S 02510C

this guide assumes that you are updated to atleast 2.0.13146.0 or beyond

The following tutorial will take you through the simple process of communicating with a Liteon DG-16D2S DVD Drive using Jungle Flasher and an X360USB PRO adapter. It doesn't matter what firmware you have on your drive - this method will work regardless.

Requirements:
Xecuter X360USB Pro
Xecuter CK3 Pro or Xecuter CK3 Lite to power/control the DVD drive
Xecuter CK3 Probe 3 (To extract your DVD Key)
Latest version of Jungle Flasher (Must be v0.1.84 (250) and above)
Latest version of X360USB PRO firmware (must be at least v18)
X360USB PRO Windows Drivers
Windows XP / Vista / 7 - 32bit or 64bit
MAC OSX (Using Parallels, Bootcamp or VMWare)
There are originally four versions of the Liteon DG-16D2S, 74850C, 83850C(v1), 83850C(v2) & 93450C, however if you have updated to the new XGD3 dashboard, all Liteons were updated to the one single version - 02510C.
To find out which version of Liteon drive you have simply look at the label and you will see "FW Ver.: XXXXXC" - Naturally if you have updated to the new dashboard, this version number is now irrelevant but we show it to you as a guide.

Here is an example of the Liteon DG-16D2S DVD label. As you can see we have highlighted the F/W version - in this case it is the 74850C (When referencing the drives the letter C is rarely mentioned as it doesn't have any relevance so don't worry if you simply see "74850". Naturally the version on the label is no longer relevant if you have updated to the new dashboard - all Liteon DG-16D2S are now 02510C.

Before you connect everything you first need to install the X360USB Pro Drivers. These are signed and work in Windows XP / Vista / 7 both 32bit and 64bit. Download the small driverpack and plug in the X360USB PRO USB Cable. When it asks for the drivers simply point to the files you saved and they will install with ease. You are now ready to hook everything else up.

Working with a stock Liteon DG-16D2S is slightly trickier as you have to take the drive case apart and then use an Xecuter CK3 Probe 3 to extract the DVD key (The CK3 Probe 3 connects between your DVD power source, namely a CK3 Pro or CK3 Lite and the DVD drive itself). This only needs to be done once, and as soon as you have your key you can connect to the drive as normally as you would any other drive without taking it apart or using a Probe 3 again.

So we will split this guide into 2 parts. Part A deals with extracting the drive key using the CK3 Probe 3, and Part B will deal with using Jungle Flasher as per normal for reading / writing of the firmware. If you already have your drive key then you simply skip to Part B.

You will first need to take the DVD drive apart in order to get to its internal controller board. The point we are interested in is MPX01 (highlighted with green circle). Be careful as there are live voltages so make sure you attach the probe to the correct point and no other place on the PCB or you may harm your drive.

Let's get everything hooked up. First, simply connect the DVD power supply (in this case the Xecuter CK3 Pro) to the DVD drive (take care to make sure it is fitted the correct way - the wrong way can damage your drive - the green wires on the power cable show it to be the correct way up - red is the wrong way. Also note that the Probe 3 cable is connected directly to the DVD drive end and not the CK3 Pro). Connect the molex power cable from your PC or from an external Molex power supply to the CK3 Pro/Lite. Connect the SATA cable from the DVD drive to the X360USB Pro, and then connect the USB cable from the X360USB Pro to a USB port on your Netbook/Notebook/Laptop/Desktop computer. All these connections are illustrated in the diagrams below.

The CK3 Probe 3 power cable is edited in this image for illustration purposes. The actual cable is an extended length at 18inches giving far more flexibility when moving your equipment around.

Part B

I thought I'd just quickly post this up as I was doing a bunch of LT+ testing tonight and figured you'd like to see how simple it is to use one the SPUTNIK360 addon when you have an X360USB PRO and the latest JungleFlasher.

Before you do anything - dump the drive key using SLIMKEY feature in JF. Keep a copy of the dummy.bin safe.

Remove the PCB from the drive (follow steps 1 to 13) and install the switch as shown in the pictures below. I prep the solder points with a fiberglass scratch brush (essential bit of kit for any modders toolbox) and apply a bit of flux. Then cut the trace and solder the switch - very quick and easy.

Switch to 10 ohms to start with (most work with this) and switch to unlock. Run intro in latest JF - power cycle - then will ask you to unlock the SPI. Click yes and you are done

Now move the switch back to Normal and now do a full read and save the OFW file (you must the full LT Plus pack in your firmware folder before you can complete this step - it authenticates the firmware dump) and then you are able to do a full write to the previously locked chip. Once complete hit CTRL + SHIFT + F11 to lock again (new versions of JF have a button where you can simply click 0x00 unlocked / 0x8c locked)

Simple.

Or you can use the SPUTNIK360 PROBE

Open the new JF and click on Intro/Device ID

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Click Yes then Power Cycle the drive (Power off then on)

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

SPI detects as locked - simply click yes to unlock

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

That's it

No need to probe mpx01, no need for 3rd party software. Nice and simple.

I will do a more detailed guide shortly showing how to set the status back to locked after you have flashed it and how to set the PCB back to default like it was never touched.

Oh and this may be useful also.......
