What is Portfolio?

A portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work that exhibits the student's efforts, progress, and achievements in one or more areas of the curriculum.

First off you should get WordPress if you do not do custom coding.

Now, word press has many free designs but to make your site stand out you should buy a Premuim theme. Why? because they are much, much more professional and clean looking.

Include Only Your Best Work
Your portfolio is not a place to store everything you have ever done. It is the place for you to show off your very best work and nothing else. Quantity is not what impresses people. Consistent quality does.

Your Work Should All Reflect Your Style
Your work should be your own. You will have your influences but you should still have your own personal style and all your pieces should reflect that style. This is not to say that all your pieces should be the same, not by any means. It just means that you need a style all your own that is clearly presented in your work.

Use Original Imagery
If you use the same old imagery that everyone else uses and that has been used a hundred times before then it will be difficult to get anyones attention. Seek out original imagery. This alone will make people look twice at your work.

Dont Include Overworked Pieces
Using too many techniques to alter your pieces looks downright amateurish. That may sound harsh but its true. You dont want faces too flawless or images that show off your ability to use special effects. Let your talent stand on its own.

Keep it fresh
Make sure you update your portfolio regularly with new content. A stagnant portfolio could be off-putting to potential clients so whenever you complete some new work you want to showcase, add it to your portfolio straight away. This keeps your portfolio fresh and interesting to make you stand out.

Categorise Content
If you do have a large portfolio categorise your work to make it simple for the potential client to see each type of project. If youre a designer you could have a category for logos, print, multimedia, etc. Your aim is to make it as easy as possible for a prospective client to view and understand your work.

Provide prominent contact details
After all, you want people to contact you! To make it easy for prospective clients to get in touch include your contact details on every page. Also display links to your social media sites (professional ones, of course) as some potential clients prefer to get in touch via LinkedIn or Twitter.
