I'm not an expert on building computers but why does everyone say the i5 processor is better than the i7. It just doesn't make any sense on how a older piece of equipment would be better than a newer one.

More suited for gaming which is what people here always ask for.

Whether one CPU is better than the other has nothing to do with people recommending the i5 over the i7 in most builds. A lot of people come on this forum and post topics asking for a budget gaming build. Both the Sandy Bridge i5's and Ivy Bridge i5's will give you almost the exact same performance when gaming since games and a lot of applications don't use hyper-threading which just makes the i7 have 8 threads which is like having +4 virtual cores. Games in this century are designed and programmed to be more optimized for desktops and only utilize 2-3 cores at maximum, therefore the extra threads on the i7 are completely useless and not worth the extra $100 jump when you can put that money towards another component that WILL make a drastic impact on overall PC performance like a higher end GPU or a super speedy SSD. If you have any more questions, just ask.
