I'd try adding some kind of like interface in it, or something.
More of a menu, maybe make it looked docked on something.
Just me.

Simple. But yet not very good, No real definition on the buttons, Can't tell where they stop or where they begin. And this wouldn't be pretty if you had to slice and code since you have no actually body splitter to show the difference between the header, the nav bar and the actual content on the site (The image slider). Another thing is a one color background has no depth, At least make a light grey gradient to go with the background to show some depth in the site. Also the image slider box has like a outer glow to it or something that I can see, You may wanna get rid of that, looks out of place.

Ok, I did the same thing last night by going deep into a web design critiquing everything about it, well because its what I do. I go to school for web design, so I can't help but point out flaws, as negative as that sounds.
-It is WAY too bland. Web design is built off of simplicity, but there is a difference between simplicity and minimalism.
-For a background, don't use a standard color, subtle gradients and subtle patterns are GREAT for picking up a feel of a page and turning it from boring to intriguing.
- I feel as if the next and previous buttons should have an inner shadow and be turned into buttons, but I have seen many jquery image sliders like that, so its really based off preference
-I'd make the drop shadow on the text a little less noticeable, increase the distance and lower the size (just slightly) and you will see a tremendous effect on how it looks
Not a terrible start, just too plain overall.
