Most gaming oriented laptops are bulky.

Well, I've said it before, but a Thinkpad actually sounds perfect for you. It's everything those you saw AREN'T. They're not flashy, have insane battery life and far better build quality, and they're actually well-sized and not heavy. There's a reason I preach that gaming laptops are awful!

Did I mention they're powerful? Not for gaming at all, but they're not supposed to be. They're business-class. They also have unbeatable longevity and upgrade-ability. You can tear these things apart and put them back together in a matter of minutes! Call me a fanboy, but I actually would not buy another laptop right now. I've used a Macbook for years, but my T500 a dream come true. There is not a single thing I've been able to complain about. The design is just so great that I'm stumped.

so basically ive went into every store near me to look at these laptops. ive came up with the conclusion that i would like a laptop that comes with a backlit keyboard and possibly a dedicated graphics card. anywhere around 1000 dollars is okay. I dont like the look or feel of the think pads but the idea pads are pretty nice. also i saw a few ultra books from acer and they were nice to.. i just cant make a decision

The only Ultrabook that I can now recommend is a Macbook Air. I hate Apple with a passion but this is the only good product they have released and is extremely competitive. Everything is a tier below ( Acer with sub par build quality and resolution, Asus with horrible bleeding issues, HP notebooks filled with bloatware ). Considering you're going to college, the 7 hour battery life on the Air would serve you well. Also, you could play some decent games on the machine but it's prone to getting pretty hot.

Ok, your best bet is to get an Ultrabook and a dedicated PC. I would recommend getting the Air, and possibly once you can save up a bit more money, building your own custom PC.
