Light pollution didn't exist back then. You could see star formations and other things without a telescope.

I think it is just the light on it but here's something. Did you know that Leonardo Da Vinci actually made the Mona Lisa's background so it comes together if you put the split it in half and swap the pieces! Please can you try to do exactly what you did with that one in photoshop and post your result.
