For those of you who have Day Z, you know how hard finding guns can be when you first start. What you want to do is head north into the forest, which will lead you to good places to find supplies, tools, and guns.
If you don't have a gun you want to avoid towns, houses, army bases/hangers and power plants.
If you don't have a gun you want to go to barns, gas stations, and the small square white buildings found on the edge of towns.
Inside of these places you will find food, drinks, ammo, and guns. The guns range from pistols to shotguns to assault rifles. Basically, all the essentials needed to get better guns.
Once you have 3-4 bandages, a primary weapon, secondary weapon, decent supply of ammo, and food and drinks, you will be ready to go to better places. The places you want to go to now are cities and army bases. You will want to go prone and travel through the city like that. It is slow and boring, but if you don't zombies will see you and then if you shoot, more come. Inside cities, go for churches. They usually have Makarovs, food, soft drinks, ammo, and occasionally a magnum. Inside army bases go for the watch towers. They contain ammo, M16, M4a1, Mp5, different snipers, G18, and the different AKs. Inside of the army hangers and middle part of the bases you can find more supplies, tools, and a better bag.
Now that you have good guns, you can go to hospitals to find blood bags, big cities, and hunt other players.
I hope this was helpful. It is mean't for people just getting into Day Z who can't find weapons.

It can vary. Depends on where you live and if you chose your country's server. Example: I live in the US so I play US servers instead of UK, GB, etc. but if you do your own country I would say 30 seconds to 3 minutes
