Everybody loved The Beatles, both sexes. One Direction probably have like 10% of their fans as males.

Well yes, but the Beatles were popular because they, well, looked good and their careers started in a time that wasn't the best, so any form of happy music would be a godsend. The fact that they made good music was just a happy coincidence. One Direction isn't really that innovative, but they're apparently interesting enough to get people outside of their country of origin interested in them.

And there are tons of girls that like good music; they're hardly a commodity. You just need to look harder (and...talk to "hipsters")

EDIT: This is not to say I actually like 1D. They're obnoxious, but they at least aren't as obnoxious as a lot of other groups or rappers. I'd frankly rather have a girl listen to this tripe than crappy rap.
