If I was to build a mob spawner how many blocks high would I need to build it in order for the mobs to spawn?

depends on which mobs, zombies/creepers/skeletons need atleast 2 because they have the same dimensions as you do, while spiders i think may require 3 high, Slimes range from 1-4 blocks but wont usualy spawn at surface lvl only within the bottom 40 blocks of the map.

AND it all depends if you have inserted monster spawner blocks into your invntory, that is the fastest way to get them to spawn

3 high will be best, for endermen next update if its 3 high all mobs will spawn. so that the best height but as for size go 20x20x3 to get alot.

how do I get monster spawner blocks?
Mod them in is the only way.

3 or 4 high is enough. I guess if you wanted to build it higher you could.
