so i have a gateway laptop windows xp,model:mx6025
ive looked on their website and googled it. i still can't find anything

I had this problem years back.
Has the "Audio Driver" been updated via Windows Update.
If the update doesn't finish through the volume will not work.
Remove the update if there is one.
This may not be your problem though.
