Those are a new currency for when the next Pirate themed DLC comes out.

Are you talking about Eridium?

If so, they are used at the Black Market in Sanctuary to buy weapon ammo upgrades, inventory space and bank space. You come across it during the quest "Plan B" on Chapter 5 of the main story.

The New Seraph Crystals are going to be used as a currency in the Pirate DLC. Harvested from Seraph Guardians they'll be used to buy new Seraph (New Gun Rank, Higher than Legendary) Weapons.
