The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

--------------------------------------------
Creator - Bethesda Softworks
Platform - PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Game Style - Single player/ RPG, Adventure
Release Date - November, 11, 2011
Rating - M (Mature)
--------------------------------------------

Sypnosis - The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim is the latest edition in the Elder Scrolls series. Jump into a completely new world, the Province of Skyrim (or just Skyrim for short) battle new monsters, explore new areas, and decide the fate of all. You are the Dragonborn, born with the blood of Dragons. You are the only one who can defeat Alduin, the dragon who has plans to enslave all species, and take over the world (How original). Save the world, or hunt bunnies, it's your choice.

Storyline

Skyrim has the richest storyline of all the Elder Scrolls Games, allowing you to travel in time, hunt dragons, master spells, and a countless number of other things. Skyrim holds true to the series appealing character creation settings, and in my opinion has the best character creation of any game to date. You can expect the usual races also, except none of the strange looking races from oblivion, oh no, quite the opposite. It's easy to see the vast change Bethesda made from Oblivion to Skyrim when it comes to the races of Skyrim. I mean really who was like what the bloody hell is this thing when viewing the Khajiit race for the first time in Oblivion? Well that Feline looks, well, like a cat in Skyrim! One place where the game does take a hit though, is the length of the storyline. Although it's no Fallout 3, it's certainly shorter it seems than the other games from Bethesda. I believe I had just over 15 hours game time when I hit the Dragon Slayer achievement. This can dampen the experience for hardcore fans of the Elder Scrolls storyline, but the game keeps you so engrossed with so many other things to do, a small amount of people will be extremely disappointed by this. Skyrim has an amazing storyline though, and can be extremely addicting to play when trying to beat on the harder difficulties!

Storyline Rating: 9/10 The storyline is solid, but can be a bit confusing at times for unexperienced players.

Graphics

Skyrim is beautiful, that's all I can say to describe it. This is the most interestingly designed, and beautiful RPG I have ever had the pleasure of playing. I remember going to he midnight release, and getting home at like one am, and I was like **** I have early classes tomorrow! I decided I would at least play for like 30 minutes, and get some sleep. Needless to say I spent those thirty minutes walking through Helgen admiring the crafting done on this game. Needless to say, I had to call in sick the next day. I was blown away at polygon counts, and the great texturing and coloring in this game.

Graphics Review: 10/10 You will be hardpressed to find a better looking game of this type.

Combat

Combat in skyrim is a large improvement from the other titles. The weapons now look like, well weapons! And archery is actually something to rely on. Along with better weapon control, the game is also more challenging to me then the other games. I always play on difficulty on up from normal in Elder scrolls game, and I will say that some of the dungeons and bosses (Draugr Deathlord Overlord Anyone?) gave me quite a run for my money, and I'm not above admitting I had some controller throwing rage after being killed one too many times. Of course, perseverance pays. I love the new weapons, and the ability to name my own. It allows you to feel a special connection to your weapon. I will also include armor in this. The armor in skyrim is just...just...speechless. The armor is amazingly awesome looking, from the Dark Night seeming Ebony, to the Demon Lord Daedric. I couldn't fathom the coolness factor of the new armor textures, and the amount of customizable ways to show off your character. However, even combat has its drawbacks. I thought that the new "never breaking" idea for a ll weapons and armor was sort of, well Idk, cheap? I wasn't a fan of being able to swing forever without having to worry, or manage weapons like you could in the Fallout series. It took away a large challenge factor, and felt like Bethesda wants to walk you through the entire combat process on lower difficulties.

Combat Rating: 8/10 strong coolness factor for the new weapon and armor systems, byt small bugs, and unbreaking equipment made this category take a hit.

Spells/Shouts

Don't worry all you mages out there! Skyrim makes you feel right at home! With a countless number of spells and potions at your disposal, you will always be right here ready to fight! Skyrim now has spells in different categories, Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Expert, and Master. If you plan to make a mage character however, you should prepare for some challenges. Skyrim is full of dungeons, and I mean FULL. These are normally very cramped, and with small quarters combat with melee enemies. This can up the Hard factor when using all spells, but with a strong build, you should be able to power through. However, don't expect a very amazing experience from the new College of Winterhold stroyline. Unlike The Mages Guild some of you are familiar with, Skyrims mage questline is over in a matter of hours (about 4 hours all together). Don't get me wrong, it's very enjoyable and interesting. Just a little more depth would be nice. Now on to shouts. The new "Shout" mechanic in skyrim is cool to say the least. You literally (and I mean it) shout your enemies to death! However, not all shouts do this. You can expect to see shouts that allow to summon dragons, increase weapon power, even call up a thunderstorm! There are 20 shouts (without DLC) to master in the game. Each shout has three words. You must however find all three to use the full power of the shout. Most words are found on "word walls", ancient walls each containing one word to learn in the Dragon Language. If you plan to master all 20, be prepared to explore countless dungeons, and face many enemies. In the end though, it's very rewarding.

Spells/Shouts rating: 9.5/10 The small College questline is disappointing, but enjoyable. Expect to spend forever mastering Spells!

Side Quests/Misc

Side quests is what Skyrim is all about, side quest after side quest! Actually there's unlimited side quests! Yep you heard me, unlimited side quests! With something new Bethesda did, the game creates more and more side quests. Although, many of these are very small and less-rewarding quests. But, theres plenty of fun and interesting quests to handle! You can expect to get 100+ hours in play time easily with the quests. Moving along, in Skyrim, you can now become a Werewolf! Yep, that's right! You can now become a hulking, murderous creature who destroys everything! You can transform at anytime, but to keep the transformation, you must kill people or creatures. You have exactly one minute of werewolf time once you transform, but each kill adds fifteen seconds to that time. However, transforming in public makes you receive a thousand dollar fine. So I recommend transforming somewhere hidden, then popping out in a public place and maul everyone! I do however, wish there were more attack options then simply swipe (although it defenitly gets the job done). There's also many bugs to go with this too. Because you are a nine-foot tall monster, you cannot go through many doorways. Which can be annoying many a'time. Next up is companions, which was a big disappointment to me. Other than housecarls, who you receive for owning a house in a city, there arent really many companions in Skyrim. And the number of those with an interesting questline (example - Arcade Gannon from Fallout New Vegas) is next to none. The Housecarls die WAY too easily too. Companions just aren't very interesting in this game, and made it a lonely experience. Last of all is Factions! I've already explained the College of Winterhold though, so no need for that. So that leaves the Companions, Dark Brotherhood, and Thieves Guild I'm excluding Bards college because it's just dungeon exploring really). So, the Companions. Any fan of heavy armor and one handed will be right at home here. You can find some of the best trainers in combat here, and after completing the entire questline, can make any of them your companion! Just try and keep them alive, they don't respawn. It's a very interesting story also, but as with the College, very short. You can expect to finish it about 5 hours probably. But after that, you still recieve quests from members of the companions, such as bounty hunting, or dragon killing! Next is my favorite, The Dark Brotherhood. The Dark BrotherHood is a guild of assassins, and according to lore, is very selective in their choosing. But, in Skyrim /SPOILER ALERT/ you only have to kill someone in a certain quest, and you will receive a note with the Brotherhood logo saying We Know, and next time you sleep you get kidnapped and start the testing to join /END SPOILER/. Fans of the stealth character (like me) will love this quest. You do some pretty crazy ****, /SPOILER/ even killing the Emperor of Tamriel. /END SPOILER/ You also receive a large sum (VERY LARGE) of gold for completing the questline. It's a real emotion jerker this one, but should't be overlooked by any fan of the game! Last of all is the Thieves Guild! This is the longest of them all. I wasn't able to complete it straight through either, I had to play for like 5 hours, go do some random quest, then go back. It's probably a good 13-14 hour questline! It's also a big guild to join if you need some gold! Or, if you just wan't to raise sneak skills. It's full of twists and turns that leave you confused one moment, then amazed the next!

Quests/Misc Review: 7.5/10 Although Skyrim sports excellent Factions and abilities, the terrible companion system and large number of pointless quests was too much.

Final Verdict

Skyrim is the RPG that many people dream of, well balanced, great story, and extremely addicting. Although it suffers some bugs and faults, it pulls through, and will the foundation of many RPG titles for years to come!

Final Verdict: 9.0/10 A must have for all RPG addicts, and regular gamers with some money to spend alike.

I like to hope this review is agreeable with all, as I have played this game from every possible view, and have made every type of character I can think of. I have easily 700+ hours gametime and hope this isn't too biased because I play so much! Thanks!

Thanks!

Yeah, some of the Reviews in that topic are harder to find than others because they are organized based on the first letter of the Game, so the reason you probably couldn't find this one is because it was under the "E" categorization, for "Elder Scrolls", but it was a great review overall, keep up the reviews and just remember to check the index for previously done reviews
