a. get more durable earphones
b. learn to solder wires back together
I don't think I need to say which option is more viable. IME trying to take better care of my earphones hasn't helped. If they're built crap, they're going to break at one point or another.

Do you wrap them around your iPod? That majorly stresses the solder points and leads to an early death.
And DGK, I don't think you understand a first world problem; it is a genuine problem if someone's possession broken. An actual first world problem is the remote being on the other couch and complaining. If you're going to make a joke, don't suck at it.
