TUTORIAL
- How to turn your Laptop into a Wireless adapter for the Xbox 360 -
- And troubleshoot NAT Problems -
- And troubleshoot NAT Problems -
So, you want to connect your Xbox 360 to the Internet? But its too far away from your router/modem, and you don't want to fork out a stupidly large amount of money on buying a wireless adapter to plug into the back of your Xbox... well here is a cheap and easy way to connect your Xbox 360 to the Internet through your Laptop!
There are two methods you can use!
1) Bridging the connections
2) ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
2) ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
Method One: Bridging the connections
Requirements:
-Xbox 360.
-Ethernet Cable.
-Laptop with built-in wireless adapter.
-Home Wireless Internet.
Instructions:
[Step One]
Firstly switch off your Xbox, Laptop and Router/Modem. Connect your Xbox to your Laptop via the Ethernet cable (I don't think it matters which type of Ethernet cable you use). One end goes into the back of the Xbox and the other goes into the back/side of your Laptop
[Step Two - Laptop]
Start your laptop up and follow these tutorials.
Windows Vista/7:
Press start and type ncpa.cpl in the search bar and hit enter, then continue following the XP tut below.
Windows XP:
On the task-bar at the bottom, Click Start>Control Panel>Network Connections. Now there are two connections that you need to worry about. One should be the connection to the Internet (If your laptop has wireless capability then it will be called something like "Wireless Network Connection") and the other should be a local area connection. Highlight both of these by dragging your mouse over them or by Ctrl + Click. Right click and there should be a choice there called "Bridge Connections". This should take a few moments while Windows sets everything up.
[Step Three - Xbox]
Once the bridge has been finished try switching on your Xbox and see if you can connect to xbox live. If you are having problems then try clicking "Repair Connection" on your laptop by clicking the right mouse button on your bridged connection. If this still doesn't fix the problem. Try restarting everything (Laptop, Xbox and Router) and see if it works then. To try and diagnose the problem, and potentially fix it, go to network settings on your Xbox and Test the Internet Connection.

Method Two: ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
Requirements:
-Xbox 360.
-Ethernet Cable.
-Laptop with built-in wireless adapter.
-Home Wireless Internet.
Instructions:
[Step One]
Find an Ethernet cable. It can be any Ethernet cable. The Xbox 360 automatically does a cross-over process so you don't need a special cable. Plug one end directly to your Xbox 360 and plug the other into the PC/Laptop. Almost every PC has one of these. If you have both your PC and Xbox 360 on, you will see a green light on the PC connector and possibly an orange (data) flashing light. This means the connection is working.
[Step Two - Laptop/PC]
Windows Vista/7:
Press start and type ncpa.cpl in the search bar and hit enter, then continue following the XP tut below.
Windows XP:
Use your PC,go to Start, Control Panel. Right click the wireless connection and go to its properties window. Click the Advanced tab and go to the "Internet Connection Sharing" section. Check the top box, uncheck the bottom box. Then click ok. We have finished setting up the PC.
[Step Three - Xbox]
Go to System Settings, Network settings and then press "Test Xbox LIVE Connection". Everything should pass if set up correctly. The PC should say that it found a local area connection. Your internet on your PC should also work. If none of these work, something was probably not set up right. Go back and double check your settings and steps and keep retrying until it works.

How to Fix: Error: Your NAT type is set to strict (or moderate)
SYMPTOMS
When you run the Xbox LIVE Connection Test, you receive the following error message:
Your NAT type is Strict (or Moderate). People on networks with this NAT type may not be able to join certain games or hear other people while playing online.
After testing your Xbox LIVE connection, a NAT warning appears as a yellow triangle:

Your NAT type is Strict (or Moderate). People on networks with this NAT type may not be able to join certain games or hear other people while playing online.
After testing your Xbox LIVE connection, a NAT warning appears as a yellow triangle:
THINGS TO TRY
Solution 1: Restart your network equipment
1. Turn off your Xbox 360 console and network hardware (for example, your modem and router).
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Turn on your modem and wait for it to come back online (approximately one minute).
4. Turn on the next piece of hardware (for example, a router), and wait another minute.
5. Repeat step 4 for every additional piece of network hardware.
6. Turn on your console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
7. Select Network Settings.
8. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
If you still receive a NAT warning, please try the next solution.
Solution 2: Turn on UPnP on your network hardware
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a standard that helps routers communicate effectively. If your router or gateway supports UPnP, make sure this setting is turned on.
Please refer to your hardware documentation for help turning on UPnP. Most hardware manufacturers have Web sites that include support information.
If you change the UPnP setting on your network hardware, restart your hardware and test your Xbox LIVE connection.
If you still receive a NAT warning, please try the next solution.
Solution 3: Simplify your setup
Your router or gateway might be having problems sharing an Internet connection. To see whether this is true, try simplifying your setup.
1. If you have a wired connection: Temporarily unplug everything from your router, except the cable to your modem and the cable to your Xbox 360 console.
or
If you have a wireless connection: Temporarily turn off everything that's connected to your wireless network except your Xbox 360 console.
2. Test your Xbox LIVE connection (on your console, go to My Xbox, select System Settings, select Network Settings, and then select Test Xbox LIVE Connection).
If you do not receive a NAT warning after simplifying your setup, it suggests that the router is having problems handling multiple connections. To try to fix the problem, please go to the next solution.
Solution 4: Open network ports
Your network hardware or firewall might be blocking communication with the Xbox LIVE servers.
If you're connected to a network through your workplace or a college, ask the network administrator to open the following ports:
TCP 80
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
UDP 53
TCP 53
If youre not connected to a workplace or college network, you need to open network ports on your network hardware. Opening ports can be a little challenging, but the following information will get you started.
Part 1: Switch to manual IP settings
Before opening ports on your network hardware, we need to get the IP settings from your computer and then use those IP settings on your Xbox 360 console.
To get your computers IP settings
1. On your computer, click Start, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
Note If youre using Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
2. At the prompt, type ipconfig, and then press ENTER.
3. Find your network connection (for example, look for something called "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection"). Write down the numbers for the following items:
IPv4 address (or IP address)
Subnet mask
Default gateway

4. Make up a unique IP address for your Xbox 360 console and write it down. For example, add 10 to the last number of your computers default gateway address. (For example, if your computers address is 192.168.1.1, use 192.168.1.11 for your consoles IP address.)
Note Each IP address on your network must be unique.
Now lets set your consoles IP settings.
To set your Xbox 360 consoles IP settings
1. On your console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
2. Select Network Settings, and then select Configure Network.
3. On the Basic Settings tab, select IP Settings.
4. Select Manual.
5. Select IP Address.
6. Enter the unique IP address that you made up, and then select Done.
7. Select Subnet Mask, enter your computers subnet mask, and then select Done.
8. Select Gateway, enter your computers default gateway, and then select Done.
9. Select Done.
10. Press B on your controller and then test your connection again.
Part 2: Open ports on your router or gateway
Now lets open ports on your router or gateway, so that your network hardware can communicate with the Xbox LIVE servers (this is also called "port forwarding").
To open ports on your router or gateway
1. Start your Web browser.
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
2. In the Address bar, type the default IP address for your router or gateway, and then press ENTER.
Here are the default IP addresses for a few router or gateway manufacturers.
Default IP addresses
Belkin
192.168.2.1
Cisco/Linksys
192.168.1.1
DLINK
192.168.0.1
Netgear
192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1
If your manufacturer is not listed above, refer to your documentation or your hardware manufacturer's Web site for help finding the default IP address.
3. Type your user name and password (for your router or gateway), and then click OK.
Note: If you do not know the default user name and password, refer to your hardware manufacturers documentation.
4. Once you are logged in, you should see your router or gateway's configuration page.
5. Open the following ports:
Port 88 (UDP)
Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
Port 80 (TCP)

NOTE:
This is information gathered from several different sources, I have made this because many people, (who for some reason can't use Google), have been wondering how to do this and don't want to spend $100 on some crap adapter.
I haven't seen any other tutorials like this so forgive me if there is.
I take credit for gathering the data, displaying it in an easy to read tutorial and testing it. other than that credit goes to the sources listed.
Both methods Tested and working as of 12/9/2010 (or 9/12/2010 for Americans =D)

The local area connection will be your xbox (from your laptops Point of view anyway)
So if thats not coming up maybe its not plugged in correctly? or your laptops not recognizing you xbox so maybe update the drivers.
