Avast is reliable and free.
Malwarebytes has a good, free program.
McAfee has to be paid for, but is worth it.
AVG is easy to get for free.

Probably start with Avast and Malwarebytes.

Best to use would be Microsoft Security Essentials.

It is good and doesn't slow down your PC's performance.

Great Anti-Virus program overall.

PS: If you get Windows 8 it is re-branded "Windows Defender" which is an Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware program. It should already be pre-installed when you get it.
