Assuming that they do exist, I think they would be bad, but I don't think it would matter because they wouldn't nearly be as powerful as people make them out to be.
How are they going to manage turning the military against its families?
They will not be able to stop an entire country from defending itself, even if there was a complete gun ban, people would endure and do whatever is necessary to survive.
