Yes it does work.
You have to invite you're friends whenever you follow the steps.
1. make a custom game, join it, and leave it.
2. home screen, click on system link, hover over create a game, hit y, and find a joinable friend.
3. click X to join, and spam A until you're in that custom game you just left.
4. invite or have them join immediately.
5. Set up the bots fast, and whatever rules.
6. Start the game, and enjoy.

I can invite them just fine. Try setting up the bots, and then start the game.

You can start it with bots. What I do is I set up the bots, and start the game, and while "Start Game" is still grey and you are waiting for the match to start; thats when i invite my friends.

At 9pm I am hosting a challenge, and custom xp lobby.
