I have just bought a white 4gb xbox and need a HDD for it. The microsoft ones are expensive and I was wondering can I put in any hard drive such as a 500gb 7200Rpm one? or has anyone tried an SSD? I also have a 64gb memory stick, could i store games on that?

You have a stock xbox right? Not a jtag/RGH? And you wanna use it on xbox live?
If it's a stock xbox and you wanna use it on live then you need to use an official microsoft xbox hard drive (250 gig or 320 gig).
If you have a Jtag/RGH xbox you can use different harddrives, keep in mind the slim uses 9.5 mm harddrives (aka laptop harddrive). Not the standard 12.5mm harddrives, that is if you wanna put it in the harddrive casing for your slim.
Example I have a dual nand slim, flip a switch it's a regular xbox and connect to live, with a standards 320 gig harddrive. But when I flip over to my RGH nand I put in my 1 terabyte harddrive for my 500 xbla games, and my over 500 regular 360 games.
If you use a non Microsoft harddrive and wanna use it on xbl it will only show up as 16 gigs if it works at all.
