I would suggest the Lenovo Y580, it has an ivy bridge core i5 and Nvidia GTX660M for right at around $900

They have a cheaper AlienWare laptop for like $1000. I don't know how it is, but check it out. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Don't pay 1k on Alienware for some flashing lights.

I would suggest one of these laptops, but It's really hard to find a decent laptop with some power. You could get a powerful desktop though with 1k.

This is the one I just bought. Awesome laptop. It's a little over your price range but DEFINITELY worth it. I can get 35.2 FPS on Unigine Valley benchmark with 1280x720, 8xAA and Ultra quality. The toshiba is more like this one but this one is more lightweight plus it has the MSI afterburner. Only thing I find as a hassle is that its Windows 8.
Specs are:
i7-3630QM
Intel HD 4000 on board graphics
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660m
15.6" FHD, 1920x1080 non glare
8GB Ram
750GB HDD 7200 RPM
Killer gaming lan 802.11b/g/n
5.28 lbs w/battery
$1199.99

I totally agree with you, but if he is like me and always travelling, a laptop is quite nice. I am starting on building my own custom desktop with a little help from my friend that used to work for Apple and has gone to college for computers and computer tech. I am only 14 years old so it's a pretty big achievement for me. I have a part time job that is super awesome and flexible.
