Ok , so i have chosen my components that I will probably end up buying but I am a first time builder and have no idea what PSU to buy. What are the ins and outs of PSUs and how do I chose a wattage and other specs?

You can usually base your decision based on the graphics card alone if the build is balanced. What are the parts you're looking at?

I am looking to get:

Graphics: Sapphire HD 8750
CPU: Dual core i3 3220
Hardrive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB
Optical: ASUS DRW-24B5ST
Case: Zalman Z9 Plus

I havent decided on a MB yet either and any advice on that would be appreciated as well. I dont really know what to be looking for in a MB.

Get around 6/8GB Ram DDR3 That should be enough. I Would recommend getting the Intel i5.

I'm liking your GPU - Mean the 7850?
Do you really need an optical drive? You've got a laptop with one in it; just means you can save a bit more money for other things.
RAM - which stuff you getting? They've got different models. If you can, try and get this: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
A 450W psu would be more than enough for your build, and it'd give you plenty of expansion room in the future. A really high rated one is this: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Currently out of stock I know, but a great power supply at that price.
Case? Well because of the aesthetics you like you can't get better at that price range. Solid case.

EDIT: As for a motherboard, it depends on a few things. I'll message you on Facebook later with what to look for, or I'll edit this post. Off out now, back in about 2 hours.

A few to look at:

Just have a look at them, and check if they have the features you'd sort of want on that motherboard.

In that area.

Z77 boards - mainly for mid to high end builds. Natively support overclocking, Intel Smart cache etc
B75 boards - good boards for a lower price but don't have the same features of Z77 chipsets.

It depends what you want to get out of the board.

Sounds good , but the graphcs card says that it is a 500W and abviously that is more than the PSU output you said.

The reason they say that is because they have to recommend a higher wattage than required as many people will have non branded cheap power supplies that wont supply the power they say they will.

Antec is more than sufficient. A strong single 12V rail supplies even power across the computer. It's definitely fine.

The VP-450 has two 12v rails, not that it matters how many rails a PSU has. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

It can also supply over 550w in overload if it needs to, which is just awesome. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Last link, I promise. This PC with the card overclocked won't draw more than 300w from the outlet. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
