What is reputation and what does it do?

I guess you could consider reputation "just a number" some people take it serious, and some don't.
You receive reputation power by making 25 posts (not spam) and or receiving 100 reputation points from users (usually when you're helpful)
You can find more information inside the "Reputation" tab at your account page.

If you're helpful etc, people give you rep in away of saying 'thanks'. E.g. You made a helpful topic, I give you +50 rep points. Your rep power doesn't go up by 50. You need a 100 rep points for 1 rep power. Also think it's 25 posts for 1 rep power.
Another example from the reputation page on your profile:
But never ask for rep.
