Are there any down sides to having a jailbroken i phone cause i remember when i jailbroke my ipod, after a couple of months it was getting noticeably slower and was freezing more and was 'respringing' without me actually doing it

If you download loads of tweaks, junk and bad sources then yeah it's going to slow down your iDevice. Depending on the model of course. I have a fair few packages installed on my iPhone 4s and it's fine so far.

Are there any types of tweaks that i should avoid? And are there any sources i should stear clear off?

He's spot on. Except for the fact he forgot to mention that themes will slow it down too. If you find a theme that changes almost everything, that will slow you down. As for the respringing, that must have been a corrupt package. If you ever see red text in cydia, fix it asap.

None that I know of the top of my head. What model are you using? Everything should run smoothly on iPhone/iPod 4 and above.
