I've basically cut it down to 2 laptop's I'm considering:
Lenovo Ideapad Y500:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Specs:
15.6" Screen
Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor (2.4 GHz)
12 GB DDR3 RAM
1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 16 GB Solid-State Drive
DUAL SLI Nvidia GT650M (2 GPU's, 2gig each)
OR:
Asus G75VX-TS72
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Specs:
17.3" Screen
Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor (2.4 GHz)
16 GB DDR3 RAM
750GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
3GB NVIDIA GTX 670MX GDDR5
Lenovo Ideapad Y500: $1,100
Asus G75VX-TS72: $1,500
Is it worth the extra $400 to get the Asus? I would primarily be using this laptop for Music Production (heavy use of plugins and effects & audio within DAW's) and of course a little bit of gaming.
I'm drawn to the Lenovo 'cause it gives me $400 to spend on games, maybe a carry case/backpack, some software & equipment etc, if i got the asus that would be all of my budget gone (but is it worth it?) After watching youtube vids and reading reviews, the GPU capability seems pretty much the same between the two, only downside is a slower HDD (5400rpm) AND 4gigs less ram with the lenovo, but I'm not sure if I even need those things..
Please no "just get a desktop with those specs for half the price" comments, I already have a desktop, I just want something i can take around (travelling, friends' houses, studio's etc)
Thanks in advance for anyone who helps, will keep an eye on this topic

The Lenovo sounds like it would do all that you need, but all that concerns me about it is the Dual SLI cards, they will probably run very hot and use alot of power.
My Laptop has a GT555M 3GB Nvidia card, and at full pelt the battery will last over an hour and wont get too hot, which is impressive for a laptop.
Only problem with the lenovo is dont fall for tha SSD. I have a 128GB SSD, and although they are extremely fast (6 second boot), mine was over 70GB full after a Win 8 install and what i class as essentials. Bare in mind installing programs to the HDD will see no performance boost.
Lenovo = Best Choice, but upgrade the SSD with the extra cash
Asus (I personally have a 17in laptop) = Desktop Replacement and futureproof

Thanks for the reply, I don't actually see the point of the 16GB SSD in the lenovo, i asked them on chat support and they just said to "boost performance" but not what performance specifically, i don't even see how 16gb can make a difference to anything, still it seems far more portable than the Asus, which is my main use for it.
Also i will probably be getting a new one in the next couple of years so it doesn't need to be extremely futureproof, atm this seems like the best option
(oh and the majority of the time i use it it will be plugged in, so not too worried about battery life, also the cooling system is good apparentally so it doesn't get too hot)

Thinking on it, I dont even think you'd fit Win 7 / 8 on a 16GB SSD (LOL nice one Lenovo)
Well yeah, go for the Lenovo defo.
Heres my specs:
i7-2630QM 3.2GhZ
8GB DDR3 RAM
128GB m4 SSD / 640GB 5400RPM HDD
3GB Nvidia GT555M
I can honestly say that having everything run off a HDD seriously lowered performance in comparison to the rest of the hardware. I would say with the money you save DEFINITELY get an SSD, and put your OS and most used programs on it.
Seriously, my system times were this:
Photoshop CS6:
HDD - 12s
SSD - 7s
Windows 8 boot:
HDD - 34s
SSD - 8s (to desktop!)
Any Office (2013) Apps:
HDD - about 3s
SSD - instant
