DWARF FORTRESS DISCUSSION THREAD

I searched the entirety of the forums, and there's not a single Dwarf Fortress topic!
There are only mentions about this game influencing Minecraft, but no discussion.

Anyways, I hope a large majority have heard of Dwarf Fortress. It looks relatively primitive, content-wise however it is huge. Mouse controls are minimal. Using the interface takes some serious time to learn, by the time you'll easily lose 5+ fortresses.
Unlike Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress does not update often, usually every 6 months or more. You will find most utilities and mods to be updated.

The creators of Dwarf Fortress live completely on donations, averaging $30,000 a year. Sometime it peaks at $50,000, particulary if a major neccessary update is released. At the current moment, trees, cities and NPCs are the major focus of the next update.

For rogue-lovers, there is adventurer mode. At the moment, it's a bit lame on the civilized parts of the game; however combat is sickenly detailed as a turn by turn basis of events happens. Bite your enemy onto the lower left leg, tearing the fat, and latching on! A major artery has been opened! McUnfortunateVictim has bled to death.

For people who like real-time strategy (although you can pause at anytime), there is Fortress Mode. This is the main function of the game, and is more fleshed out. You never really control your dwarves as directly as you'd like: you set workshops up and order jobs that need to be done, from simply digging out a new shaft to mass creating soap. Caravans from other races come to trade with you seasonally, often at the same time enemy factions are attacking. Fortresses almost end in ruin from a variety of reasons. Expect your doorways to be covered in vomit.

I could say a lot more, but that might overwhelm you. Not to mention spoilers. If the wiki tells you there are spoilers down below, please do not read them!

You're going to need it.

If you know anything about the game, feel free to post.
