The AMD route will actually give you a much better upgrade path than socket 1155 because there is another generation of CPUs being released for AM3+ whereas Intel is moving to socket 1150. A few games can take advantage of the extra threads that the 8-core Vishera CPUs have as well, so quad-cores are no longer the end-all-be-all of gaming CPUs. Which is where the Xeon E3 1230 V2 comes in...

No aftermarket cooler or high-end motherboard needed. A $50 B75 motherboard and the stock cooler are all you need and this is basically a 3770 without the onboard graphics and with ECC support.

Also, AMD motherboards tend to be much cheaper than the Intel equivalents.
