well if microsoft really tired they could of put backwards compatibility. when you buy a blu ray player they can still play DVDs so why cant the X1 play 360 games?

Hey guys, this is just briefly to explain why the Xbox ONE doesn't have backwards compatibility.

As many of you know, the new Xbox ONE contains a new Blu-Ray disc reader as apposed to the normal 360 7GB dual layer disc reader.

Now many people have been asking why the X1 doesn't have backwards capability and this is kinda just to sum up why and make it clear for folks. For those with common sense and a intermediate technological intelligence you should already know why.

Okay so as we know PS3 has a Blu-Ray DVD disc reader and the games are printed onto a Blu-Ray disc, 360 games aren't. The PS4 will contain the same disc reader as the PS3 (or an updated version that still reads Blu-Rays). However due to the Xbox 360 not containing the Blu-Ray disc reader the games are put onto a standard DL 7GB disc. Now, if you have a Blu-Ray DVD player at home you may notice that it will not read or play some SD DVDs, this is because the disc reader doesn't have the correct coding to read SD DVDs. Why is this relevant? Because its the exact same case with X1. It will contain a Blu-Ray disc reader that is not coded to read SD games because it will just increase the X1's price even more, (maybe looking to $600/$650) which of course is too much to pay.

tl;dr

    PS3 contains Blu-ray reader so does PS4.
PS3 games are printed on Blu-ray Discs, Xbox 360's are not.
The X1 will contain a Blu-ray Disc reader that can't read the SD coding of 360 games due to it making the price of the X1 more than it already is.
It's basically cheaper to keep your 360 and play 360 games on that, than pay an extra $100/$150 just so that it contains a super Blu-ray Disc reader.

Hope that helps!

Lol, this is NOT why there isn't backwards compatibility. They've already announced why the new systems don't have it. Basically what you just said above is that the Xbox cant play 360 games because it has a Blu-ray disc reader and the 360 doesn't, and that the PS4 should be able to play PS3 games. Wrong. Even if the problem was the Blu-ray player, the Blu-ray player can play DVD's and Blu-ray discs. That is not the problem.

The reason neither of the two new system's (Xbox One and PS4) are backwards compatible is the fact that both of the new systems use different system architectures. "Why is this relevant?" Well, the Xbox 360 and PS3 used custom Cell-based processors to run the games and the console itself. The Xbox One and the PS4 are using x86-based processors that you would find in an actual computer, and the way these processors evaluate and calculate is completely different from Cell-based processors. That is why there is no backwards compatibility with these consoles. It has nothing to do with the difference in the disc reader.

I hope this explanation helped you, Freq.

your logic is a little invalid, the PS4 is backwards compatible as of E3 it is, an update later in the future may rid that feature but architecture also has nothing to with it, as the Nintendo wii could still play game cube games at one point, idk if it can anymore... It's the software that has been programmed in the unit, architecture, Blu-ray player yada yada doesn't matter, it's what they programmed the system to do... as computer scientist myself, if you want systems to do certain things and the technology is capable of doing it all is need is software allowing it to do so... without the appropriate software/ coding the unit is incapable of processing Xbox 360 games and frankly I don't care if it can't read 360 games cause once I get the unit I'm not switching back

The architecture does have something to do with it. The system's are based on x86 CPU architecture, not the PowerPC Cell CPU's that were in the previous generation. This is from an IGN article, which can be found here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

"It has unfortunately now been confirmed that the Xbox One will not be backwards compatible, either with the Xbox 360 or the original Xbox.

Xbox Live Vice President Marc Whitten elaborated on the situation, saying, "The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective.""
