Windows 8 will perform slightly better in games and boot, resume, sleep, and shutdown times, but it will probably take a little more work on your part to get it working the way you want it.

No need unless you use the features it offers. Few will, so stick with Home Premium.

I'd go for windows 7, Windows 8 is a lot of work and from what I've heard some games glitch/have problems on it.

Depends does he plan to get more than 16gb's of ram? If not then home premium will be perfect.

I've used both and if I were you i'd go with Windows 7. Windows 8 does have a faster boot time but Windows 7 is just a lot easier to use.

About a month ago, I would've said Windows 7. Now, I have to say Windows 8. At first it was a little messy. But soon Windows 8.1 will be rolling out and improving Windows 8 tenfold. It will be much smoother and the start button is returning!
