Considering I have never played any of the Fallout games, should I buy Fallout 3 or New Vegas?

I think I may go with Fallout 3 then. I was speaking with a friend about it also, and he says I should go with Fallout 3. I was considering buying Arma instead, but I'd only play Day-z, so I will just wait for the standalone.
Once again, thanks to all of you for your help

I love New Vegas and all, but Fallout 3 is probably my favorite modern game of all time.
I love everything about it, from the decimated ruins of D.C., to the dark swamps of Maryland. The enemies are varied; from the stomping Super Mutants to the creepy ghouls to the sadistic Raiders. The guns were all fun and there was a ton to do in terms of side quests and hidden areas.
I've completed it twice, and there's still several things that I haven't seen yet. The world is so packed that it would take several months just to discover everything.
