I was learning about cognitive approaches during my Psychology AS and the Zimbardo Prison Experiment was mentioned. It's not really a conspiracy but is quite interesting.

The Zimbardo Prison Experiment or Stanford Prison Experiment was the experimentation of a collection of ordinary people; 24 male students. The experiment exclaimed that 12 of the male students would attain 'Prisoner Roles' whilst the other 12 attained 'Guard Roles'. The experiment was from a cognitive approach examining how the mind would react to an authoritative figure.

The Guard's were given wooden battens to help them create a sense of authority and establish their dominance. They also had the power to take away luxury items and reward too. A revolt from the Prisoners barricading the door led to disciplinary actions as they attacked the Prisoners with fire extinguishers. The punishments continued as multiple Prisoners were locked in solitary confinement, forced to be naked and urinate in a bucket which could not be emptied as well as other sadistic punishments. The psychological attacks damaged the welfare and mind of the Prisoners where one was reported to go crazy.

The experiment was ended after 6 days compared to the expected duration of two weeks. This was because a graduate student observing questioned the morality of the event, this caused its cancellation to which the guards were unhappy.

The experiment proved the power of authority and actually how attitudes change towards and authoritative figure.

Seems weird of how they just chose randomly if the prisoners were guards would it have a different outcome to what it was originally?

I believe it was random, but I'm not 100% on that sorry, still interesting. I do believe it would have the same results due to the amount of power given to them, power corrupts.

yes that is true power does corrupt your mind but like what if they kept the experiment going to the actual 2 weeks but after the 7 day they had traded roles for the next 7 days.

If they were to swap roles that would be very interesting, the results would repeat, also the experiment had to terminate due to the health of the prisoners declining.

This was interesting, I wonder if they chose the prisoners who were well behaved for guards and the ones who cause riots and crap to be their prisoners?

They made an excellent film of this experiment starring Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker.

It's a possibility, it would make sense but would it affect the validity of the test?

That was a great film, I only realised it was based on the experiment after learning about it in my Psychology class.
