Depending on the type of DVD drive your console has will tell you what parts you need. BenQ, Samsung, and hitachi (non- 78/79 revisions) only need a way to power the drive (the console, or external power such as the CK3) and a sata cable connected to your PC. Lite-on drives will also need a probe which can be home-made or bought.
The likely hood of being banned if you stay up to date with firmware updates is virtually 0%.

In a period of the last 2 years I have successfully flashed over 100 Xbox 360s, various drives and I have done this without buying any tools from executer although they are designed well, I created my own probes which did not cost me anything. Benq drives tend to be older ones before 2009 as well as Hitachi, Liteons Philips are newer dated on or after 2009. Another way to check is removing the front plate and checking what color wires you have. Yellow = liteon, white = benq, no wires = Hitachi and so on. As for what you need I would recommend making a simple probe and using the xbox to power the drive. I know people say you can get flagged but honestly you can already be flagged for playing the same copy of a game that thousands others have.
