Honestly, the best way for me was just to jam out in my room and learn chords.

Once i learned all my chords, you just mess with them all day and try to find what sounds right and wrong.

And basically from there, you just learn other stuff like scale.

Practice is the key man, don't waste your time and money on lessons from others.

So, what I did was start out just playing by myself. Just jam out. It'll sound like crap, but you want to get yourself used to the feel of the instrument. After playing around for a few weeks you'll start to get calluses on your fingers so putting tension on the strings wont hurt as much. Once your used to playing around, I recommend you use music tabulature to learn some basic songs. One of the songs that helped me start out was "The Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson. While it is not a complicated song, it helps you start to build a simple foundation wrist movement with your picking hand, and helps you learn how to transition between barre chords. I then recommend you learn some basic scales that not only help in song production, practicing scales help you to keep your fingers nimble and help stretch your fingers.

Just keep practicing man, and also guitar lessons are an amazing experience. I can say that I can play pretty well, yet I look forward to every guitar lesson because my teacher always seems to have more and more knowledge he can pass on to me.

But the number one rule of guitar playing is to:
Have fun.

Dave Mustaine, one of the best guitarists, once said that "Nobody is better at guitar than anyone else". We all have different styles that make us unique. Have fun, and welcome to music!

If you dont mind me asking, what guitar are you thinking of picking up?

If you want to learn guitar, I suggest taking lessons. You will never learn really good if you do something online.
