My friend dropped his laptop the other day and it wouldn't turn on at all so he asked me to bring his hard drive home and get the data off of it. I put it in my laptop and tried to boot up and got a disk read error, so i put in a windows 7 boot disk and changed bios settings to boot to the cd drive first and when i press enter to boot to the cd it stays on the starting windows screen, can this be caused by a bad hdd? I also tried this in my desktop computer with my other 2 hard drive disconnected and got the same results.

Yes it can be a bad HDD I think they have ways to connect to it if you have sata to usb and maybe you can get a COUPLE things off of it but in most cases when he dropped his computer it really did a toll.
