When you sign up for gold do you pay month by month and have the choice to end your subscription?

This is what I'm thinking, I want to go gold, but don't want to be stictly stuck to what could be a monthly contract that I can't back out of whenever I want. Any info on this would be great

I think theres an option to cancel your subscription when you pay, i was just wondering myself since im thinking of becoming a gold member too
