I wouldn't go into it with the mindset of making it 'big'. The YouTube scene is so saturated now that it's going to be down to pure luck (and obviously a bit of dedication) that you'll be successful.
Just go into it with the intention of just having fun and uploading to YouTube. Then you won't be disappointed if it doesn't work out.

There's a lot of competition but most people stop after a few months or so...

Well if you did what do you have to lose ? if you like doing it, its not a waste of time even if you didn't become big. Heres my little tip, people become big because they don't give up most people will get all excited to make vids and post one and not get many views and just give up. You just need to keep going and do it no matter how many viewers are watching =] Good luck buddy.

Well there's no point buying all the stuff to just sit there give it a shot even if you don't get "big" on youtube you will still have fun doing it.

Sure you can! anyone can gain a large subscriber base it just takes the right attitude and good quality stuff!

give it time and you will gain your subs back with you putting out good videos.
