If you want your striker to make runs, make sure his positioning stat is good.
Work rates don't really matter as much, it's all about the positioning stat.
I used cavani and tevez who have high/high make really good runs since they have 88 plus positioning.
Same with gerrard, played him as a cam and he didn't push too far into defence since he had 83 odd positioning and he was always there to set up the play.

To play the game well, get defenders with good defending and heading. Balanced mids with good passing and strikers with good positioning and you'll play well

i use soldado as my ST and he has 90 positioning, i have tall defenders with pace. i do know what stats are key for positions it's just all my players feel sluggish like they're on around 4-5 chemistry
