Yeah thats the same thing that happened to me. I got set back several times from 45 or 46 to 43 (my starting point day before yestarday) pretty annoying but im glad I didnt lose my char or items.

I save properly every time. I clicked "start" > "leave GTA session". Then waited for it to load single player. I always save it properly.

I would just use character wheel. I lost my level 25 with 400'000 doing the leave GTA session.

Unusually wrote You need to wait a little bit before investing so much time into GTA Online. More than likely, there's going to be an update, because it's basically unplayable at the moment. I'm assuming it's so bad because EVERYONE was making accounts at the same time. I haven't spent too much time on it at all though, so I don't know.

Is it really too much to ask that I can play the game which I payed $60 for? I payed my own money to buy a product, so I expect it to work.

It wouldn't surprise me if the cloud servers were down and its asked you to make a temporary character or they was down last night when you were playing.
I'm also presuming you did the replaying of the 9K mission to get to the level you did.
