Whole Story of Why XBL is a Paid Service & PSN isn't
New Content Please
The first nice part about being a subscriber to Xbox Live is I get updates before you do on PSN. While you may have to wait a week, month, or never get an update, I get that update when it is ready to be released. I have heard plenty of people complain about Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3 not getting certain updates, or taking forever to get certain updates to fix game exploits. On the Xbox 360 those exploits were fixed long ago. Lets not forget that most multi-platform games get exclusive content only for the Xbox 360. So I get more content, or much needed patches on my Xbox 360 games before the PS3 games get them.
I Like Me Some Uptime
I dont know if you have noticed, but PSN tends to go down randomly. Whether its because your consoles clock is screwed up, or because there is a problem with the network, more than likely you wont be able to sign into PSN once a month. Ive been a subscriber on Xbox Live for 6 years now; the majority of the downtime Ive experienced was due to Verizon being morons. I cant even remember the last time that I wasnt able to sign into Xbox Live, or the last time I reported Xbox Live being down. Since I pay for Xbox Live, Microsoft does more to ensure their network stays up and is reliable.
Extra Features Sure Why Not!
I can do party chat so when Im playing with my friends online I only hear their voice. No I dont mute everyone else; Im just in a different party, voice chat wise. Oh and then if I want to go into another game but keep talking with them I can, pretty nifty when I want to talk with someone but not be in the same game as them. Sure I could call them on the phone, but that uses up minutes. Besides party chat with 5 people playing 5 different games is rather enjoyable. I also have the option to send voice messages, something that I dont remember being able to do in my time on PSN. Oh and I think Im getting ESPN and a couple other streaming services on Xbox Live this month, sure I dont like sports but its nice to know that I have it.
Everyone Has a Mic
Alright so this one doesnt really fall into why I pay for Xbox Live, but it makes my experience better. Everyone that bought an Xbox 360, except for perhaps some arcade models, has a microphone. That means they can communicate with me using voice and not text. This is awesome because the last thing I want to do while playing a game is read, if I wanted to read Id buy a book.
Cheaters and Jerks Be Gone!
The bad thing about a free service is its so easy to just make a new account and be a jerk. I could set up a fake KKK related account on PSN right now and really annoy some African Americans. This would not only ruin their experience but probably would ruin everyone elses as well. Since you have to pay for Xbox Live there is a lot less of that. Since your Gamertag is something you will likely keep for the duration of owning your Xbox 360 you dont want to make it something offensive. You also want to be somewhat pleasant so you dont build up a bad reputation, something PSN doesnt offer. There is also a great way to report people on Xbox Live, just press the middle button, go to the person, and file a complaint against them. You pick out the category and Microsoft will look into it. This is a great way to keep jerks and cheaters off of Xbox Live and it works very well.
You Get What You Pay For
So in case you havent figured it out yet, the theme here is you get what you pay for. Xbox Live is a paid service and PSN is not. Xbox Live offers me many great features and enhancements that PSN does not. If I got the same features and benefits on PSN do you think Id pay for Xbox Live? No, Id cancel it and have an extra $60 each year. However I get many great services and features with Xbox Live and that is why I pay for it; please stop the stupid arguments about why Xbox Live is not worth paying for. If you are too cheap to pay $60 a year for a great online service then good for you, go play PSN and be happy. Dont complain about how others like to spend money though, it really grinds my gears and makes you look like a fool.
