I think you're experiencing a type of the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon.
You were looking into coincidences, so your mind started noticing them more easily and maybe made jumps from things that you wouldn't normally consider a coincidence into being a coincidence.
The example you've given, if it weren't for the fact that you were already talking about coincidences, I wouldn't consider it to be one and you probably wouldn't have saw it as one if your mind wasn't already focusing on coincidences.
I think a lot of coincidences in groups are exactly that. A lot of coincidences.
This probably stems from my belief that there are no higher powers which have any say in what we do or our futures. Signs that something is going to happen undermine a belief in free will.
You could say that free will would be reacting to the event in a certain way, but if you were given signs of an event, wouldn't you be able to avoid the event entirely if you truly had free will?
The thought that coincidences are precursors to an event backs up determinism and that is a concept that I hate because it would have you believe that you are not free to choose and are therefore not accountable for your actions.
